Carl A.
Walock
Sep 1, 1943 — Dec 11, 2024
Farmington Hills
Carl, age 81, of Farmington Hills, passed away Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at Corewell Health Farmington Hills.
Carl Arnold Walock was born on September 1, 1943, to Stephen Carl Walock and Genevieve Victoria Walock (Zajac.) He grew up in a working-class neighborhood in Detroit, eventually becoming a big brother to Stephen Carl Walock Jr. and Jacqueline Marie Walock. After many adventures, which, due to the statute of limitations cannot be described here, he graduated St. Andrews High School and enlisted in the United States Navy. Carl proudly served as an Electrician's mate on the U.S.S Enterprise, the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Carl maintained the flight elevators, sailed around the world, did laps around the Island of Cuba during an incident in 1962 and was honorably discharged. He then began his career as a commercial electrician, installing elevators as a journeyman with the International Union of Elevator Constructors and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Carl continued those endeavors over his 40 year working life, notably installing elevators in such Detroit landmarks as Cobo Hall and the Renaissance Center.
Carl Walock loved cars. He was able to pursue his passion in retirement and complete the creation of 9 different "street rods." His prize possession was a 1966 Ford Fairlane GTA 500 convertible. It was his first new car, purchased off the lot. He kept it until the very end. He truly enjoyed driving around with his wife of 56 years Barbara Joan (Wheeler) by his side, top down and burning rubber.
Carl was an outstanding father to Scott Carl Walock and Gail Marie Costello (Walock.) He was a hands-on teacher, providing instruction on power tools, welders and auto body repair to grade-school kids. In the final phase of his life, Carl was a beloved grandfather. He always had balloons in his pockets for the grandkids Sabrina Costello, Dane Walock and Jay Walock. He was the undisputed champion of "Hide-and-Seek Grandpa." Carl loved taking the grandkids to car shows and they loved riding in the hot rods, going fast and riding loud.
Carl Walock was the definition of "I got a guy." If you needed something, you called Carl. Hot water heater out in your mobile home? You had a guy. Need a hot tub wired? You called Carl. Need a bathroom built in the basement of your condo? Carl. Truck broke down 3 States away? Carl. He always showed up for friends and family with his trademark "I got a tool for that."
Carl passed from this world on December 11, 2024, at 81 years of age. He lived an amazing life and will be greatly missed. The universe must have needed a guy.
Carl's family will receive guests on Monday, December 23, from 12-7 pm, at the funeral home. No further services will held.
Memorial tributes may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
