Obituary

Carl, of Farmington Hills, a respected Farmington Hills attorney, unexpectedly entered eternal life late Tuesday evening, December 3, 2024, at his home. He was 80 years old.

Carl was born May 20, 1944, to the late Carl and Harriett (Kuzma) Christoph, and lived a life full of love, dedication, and service to his family, community, and profession. Carl married Rose (Kelley) on August 14, 1970, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Whitmore Lake.

A proud graduate of Pius XI Catholic High School in Milwaukee (Class of 1962), Carl continued his educational journey at Michigan State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management in 1966. His career path took him through roles at Stouffer's Foods, Win Schuler's, the University of Michigan, and Eastern Michigan University, where he built a reputation for excellence and dedication in every endeavor.

Carl's commitment to his family never wavered, even as he pursued his law degree at the University of Detroit Law School, attending night classes while raising two daughters with his wife, Rose. In 1988, Carl proudly graduated from law school and went on to establish a successful law practice in Farmington Hills. He dedicated many years to his profession, including serving as a Magistrate for the 47th District Court in Farmington/Farmington Hills. His career was marked by a deep sense of justice and fairness, and his clients and colleagues will always remember his integrity and calm, level-headed approach to every challenge.

Carl's sense of humor was legendary. Known for his quick wit and a wealth of one-liners and "Carlisms," he had an infectious way of bringing joy to those around him. He was a man of high expectations, but his love for others was evident in his unwavering support, especially for his family. He attended every concert, sporting event, rain or shine, and even quiz bowl in which his daughters participated. Carl was a passionate advocate for girls' sports at North Farmington High School, working tirelessly to support opportunities for young women to excel.

A lover of life, Carl had a deep appreciation for travel. He cherished cruising, and perhaps no destination held a bigger place in his heart than Ireland, which he visited an impressive eight times. His love for Detroit Tiger baseball and MSU sports was profound and anyone who knew Carl knew of his devotion to both.  Carl also enjoyed golf and found great joy in the peaceful moments spent on the course.

In 2023, Carl was honored with the Diamond Award from the Costic Senior Center in Farmington Hills, recognizing his invaluable contributions to the community. His commitment to making the world a better place left a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to know him.

Carl is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Rose; his two deeply loved daughters, Colleen and Carrie (Matthew Krauss); his granddaughter, Ruby Rose Kantz; his sisters, Carol Coppersmith and Judy (Carl) Gruenwald, and a wide circle of friends and colleagues. His legacy of love, laughter, and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew him.

Family and friends may gather for visitation at Heeney-Sundquist on Monday, December 9, from 2-8 pm.  A time of prayer and remembrances is planned for 7:00 pm.

Carl's funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday morning, December 10, at 11:00 am (in state at 10:30 am) at St. Fabian Catholic Church, 32200 West 12 Mile Road in Farmington Hills. View the LIVESTREAM by clicking on this link.

Interment will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.
