It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Bill Mayer, a beloved father, grandfather, and a man whose vibrant personality and unwavering love touched the lives of many. Bill passed away at his home at the age of 83, leaving a void that won't soon be filled.
Bill was born in Sandusky, OH, on May 28, 1940, the only son born to Walter and Marjorie "Mimi" (Davlin) Mayer. From a young age, he exhibited traits of dedication and hard work that defined his life. Beyond his professional life, Bill had a deep passion for sports, particularly Detroit sports teams. An avid sports fan, he had an amazing ability to remember statistics and passionately followed the victories and defeats of his favorite teams. He was a true enthusiast, finding joy in the triumphs and challenges that sports brought.
Bill was also an intellectual, deeply cherishing the world of literature and engaging in avid reading. His keen mind and love for learning were evident in many aspects of his life.

He was an honorable judge and notable at state fairs in Michigan, Ohio, and the northwest, judging all varieties of chickens.
He was a devoted lover of animals. Bill's passion for animals extended to his work as his own zookeeper, caring for exotic animals and sharing that love through his ownership and operation of Mayer's Petting Zoo on Hix Road in Westland during the 1970s. Bill spent countless hours enriching the lives of students and others by sharing his time with the animals in the classroom and public settings throughout the state of MI.
In social settings, Bill's charm and jovial nature were magnetic, allowing him to command the room with ease. He had a magnetic personality that drew people in, always leaving a lasting impression.
Bill's toughness and protectiveness were evident throughout his life, earning him the reputation of a "scrapper" in his school days. He was a loving father and grandfather, always having the backs of his family, and supporting them through thick and thin. His love and care for his family were immeasurable, leaving a lasting legacy of love, dedication, and strength.
As we mourn Bill's passing, we celebrate the remarkable life he led and the indelible mark he left on all of us.
