Betty Jean
Kost
Apr 21, 1929 — Apr 8, 2024
Milford/Commerce
Betty Jean Kost, a remarkable woman beloved by many, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Betty was born on April 21, 1929, in New Falls, Ohio, the daughter of the late Burton and Alma (Harkleroad) McKinney. She was raised in Romulus, Michigan, and exemplified a strong work ethic from a young age, purchasing her own bedroom furniture set at just 16 years old. On June 7, 1947, she married her brothers' best friend, Don Howe.
Betty and Don were also skilled builders, constructing their own home in Taylor, Michigan, a testament to their shared determination and ingenuity. In 1962, they settled in Farmington Hills, where they spent almost 25 wonderful years together. Betty later found love again with Roger Kost, whom she married and shared many cherished memories until his passing in 2012.
Betty had a zest for life and a love for simple pleasures, such as indulging in hot fudge sundaes at Sanders ice cream in Farmington and cooking delicious pot roast, vegetable soup, Tollhouse cookies, family favorites. She took pride in canning and freezing produce from her parents' garden. Traveling the world with Roger brought her immense joy, including their memorable stint in Turkey in 1988.
A woman of elegance and grace, Betty had a passion for shoes and purses, always exuding class and kindness wherever she went. She enjoyed living at the Farmington Hills Fairways, especially relishing the view from the 11th tee. Cruises were a favorite pastime, and she looked forward to her annual trips to Florida every February, savoring every moment of warmth and sunshine.
Betty's greatest joy was her family, and she cherished her role as a grandmother, especially sharing a special bond with her grandson, Jonathon. She devoted herself to their care and happiness, leaving an indelible mark of love on each of their lives.
Betty is survived by her loving children, Robert (Debbie) Howe, Donna (Frank Roebuck) Kischuk; dear stepchildren, David (Katherine) Kost, Diane (Edward) Zutantas, Kathy Kost; adored grandchildren, Jason Howe, Shaun (Shannyn) Howe, Jonathon Kischuk, Jared (Kayleigh) Kischuk, Ashley (Mike) Chrzanowski, Jeff Kost, and Nick Zutantas; and 10 beloved great grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Kost; dear daughter-in-law, Debbie Howe; and dear grandson, Steve Zutantas.
A visitation will take place on Saturday, April 20, 2024, from 9- 11 am, at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home. Immediately following visitation, a funeral will take place at 11 am to honor Betty's life.
Donations may be directed to Oakland Family Services to further honor Betty's life.
Please keep Betty and her family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
