Barbara Lynne Quenneville, of Farmington Hills, Michigan passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, January 9, 2025.
She lived her life with love, determination, and a passion for learning.
Barb was born on May 8, 1940. She grew up in a loving household in Saginaw, Michigan with her parents, Frank and Julia (Settle) Bliss and her two younger siblings, Penny and Tom. She graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1958 and attended Bay City Community College for two years before transferring to Eastern Michigan University, where she met her future husband, Paul.
Barb and Paul met during a dorm mixer at Eastern Michigan University. They got engaged in the summer of 1961 and were married on January 27, 1962, moving into married housing for their last semester of college.
Barb graduated with a bachelor's degree in education and secretarial studies in 1962 and taught junior high for three years. She was actively involved in women's rights initiatives and served as the president of the Livonia chapter of the League of Women Voters in the early 1970s.
Determined to become a lawyer, Barb attended the Detroit College of Law at the age of 34 while raising her children. She graduated cum laude with her Juris Doctor degree in 1978 and practiced law for over 20 years before retiring.
Barb and Paul had four children and were deeply devoted to each other. Barb was known for her generosity, welcoming friends and family into her home, and hosting large gatherings for holidays and special occasions.
Barb prioritized her health by swimming, jogging, and later biking and walking. She was ahead of her time with her healthy eating and exercise habits.
Barb was an accomplished quilter, making intricate wedding and baby quilts for her friends and family. She also enjoyed playing cards with friends, doing crossword puzzles, and going to the theater.
Barb and Paul were avid sports fans, holding season tickets for the Pistons, Red Wings and the University of Michigan basketball and football teams. She especially enjoyed watching men's and women's basketball and would look forward to the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments each year.
Barb loved traveling, visiting many places in the US and overseas. She especially enjoyed trips to England, Italy, Spain, Greece, and Russia. She embraced learning foreign languages to enhance her experiences abroad. She especially enjoyed studying Italian and Russian.
Barb's life was marked by her zest for life. She left a lasting impact on her family and friends through her kindness and dedication to doing what was right.
Barbara is the beloved wife of nearly 63 years to Paul; loving mother of Theresa "Terri" (Jim) Sanford, Anna (Chris) Inch, Stephen (Masha) Quenneville, and Elizabeth (Kevin) Gurgel; dear sister of the late Penny Bliss and Thomas (Susan) Bliss, Sr.; devoted grandmother of Elizabeth (John) DeLisle, James Sanford and Carolyn Sanford, Abby and Emma Inch, Matthew and Mia Quenneville, and Ryan, Hannah and Kyle Gurgel; and great-grandmother of Natalie Sanford and Derek DeLisle. She is also survived by her beloved dog, Rocky.
The Quenneville family will receive guests for visitation at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home, in downtown Farmington, on Friday, January 17, from 2-8 pm, and again Saturday morning from 10 am until the 11:00 am ceremony.
Barbara's funeral ceremony is planned for Saturday morning, January 18, at 11:00 am, also at Heeney-Sundquist.
Interment will follow at Glen Eden Memorial Park, Livonia.
A luncheon will follow the cemetery prayers at a venue announced at the service.
Memorial contributions are kindly suggested to Angela Hospice, Livonia.
Barb's light will continue to shine in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. She lived her life fully and her spirit will live on forever in the hearts of her loved ones.
