Barbara Silvester
Mullen
Oct 27, 1935 — Jun 15, 2026
New Hudson
Barbara Silvester Mullen passed away surrounded by the love of her family, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, friendship, and unwavering devotion to those she held dear.
Born on October 27, 1935, in Fredericktown, Pennsylvania, Barbara was the beloved daughter of the late Peter and Mary (Kish) Silvester. From the very beginning, she carried a gentle spirit and a deep warmth that would define her entire life.
Barbara went on to attend Michigan State University, where she earned her Bachelor's of science degree in medical technology, with a minor in chemistry. Her years at MSU were filled not only with learning but also with friendships that lasted a lifetime. Whether from her college days, her Southfield neighborhood, or her many social circles, Barbara had a remarkable ability to bring people together. Friends gathered easily around her—sharing bridge games, card nights, laughter, and the kind of easy companionship that turns neighbors into lifelong friends.
A woman with a curious heart and a love of adventure, Barbara traveled extensively throughout the world. She embraced new places and experiences with joy and wonder, always returning home with stories, memories, and a deeper appreciation for life and people.
At home, Barbara's talents and passions truly shined. She was an extraordinary gardener whose vegetable gardens, flowering plants, and beautifully maintained orchards were the envy of all who visited. She had a special gift for nurturing life—whether in soil, in relationships, or in her own home.
Barbara was also known for her incredible cooking and baking. Family gatherings were never complete without her Hungarian nut rolls, pumpkin pies, and legendary stuffing. In fact, her stuffing was so beloved that she would often roast a second turkey simply to ensure there was enough to go around—the turkey itself, as family liked to say, was just a bonus.
She took pride in every detail of her home. She sewed, crafted, baked, and even ironed bed sheets, believing that comfort and care were shown in the small things. Her home was always warm, welcoming, and filled with love.
Above all else, Barbara cherished her family. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her endless joy and pride. Her love for them was deep and constant, and her face would light up whenever they were near.
Barbara was also known for her generous heart. She helped anyone in need, welcomed the sick into her care, and offered friendship and comfort without hesitation. Her beautiful smile and kind spirit made everyone feel at ease in her presence.
Barbara is survived by her loving sons, Matthew (Beth) Mullen and Sean Mullen; her adored grandchildren, Miranda (Jimmie Thorpe) Mullen, Breanna (Ross) Tanner, Andrew (Emily Satawa) Mullen, Eric, Aidan, Meghan, Catherine, and Joseph; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Remington and Rohen Tanner; and dear brother, Matthew (Jeannie) Silvester.
