Obituary

Anne May Hodges, 97, of Farmington Hills passed away on November 11, 2022. Anne was born on January 21, 1925, and lived for almost a century. The world changed significantly over those years, but Anne never did. She was steadfast in her love of God, her family and those she held as friends. She never wavered in her values or her clarity of what was right and wrong.

Anne grew up in the Palmer Park area of Detroit and was raised by her grandparents in a German-speaking household. She took great pride in her heritage and reflected fondly upon her childhood. It was here where she developed her caring and unselfish dedication to helping others. It was no surprise that later in life she held a profound devotion to St. Anthony who also was known for having the steady courage to face challenges both great and small accompanied by total trusting love and dependence on God.

Anne married, loved and cared for her husband of almost 68 years, Joe. They had a lifetime of fun and adventure together and she could not wait to reunite with him in heaven. Anne was also the loving mother of 6 children, 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and the aunt to many nieces and nephews. She valued education and hard work and lived her values by attending Cass Tech High School and Wayne State University and by being employed well into her 80s. Anne never quit living in the moment and was often referred to as the "Mayor of the 4:30 pm Mass" at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish where she welcomed all with her kind and warm attributes and demonstrated her talent for making those around her feel special. Never one to miss a moment to please, Anne was famous for her baking skills and her chocolate chip cookies, which to the delight of family, friends and neighbors, she shared often. Active and fiercely independent until she broke her hip one month ago, Anne would walk nearly 1.5 miles a day, tend to her flowers and was always ready to pull a weed whether it was at her home or on the way into a business. She loved nature and never hesitated to create beauty around her. She was also a problem solver of great strength, resilience, and persistence who achieved her goals while inspiring many along the way. Her positive, "you can do it" battle cry was ever present as she impressed upon her children and those she touched that we are all accountable for our own success as well as the success of others around us. Her legacy will live on as a loyal and unselfish servant of God and one who never gave up.

Anne will be deeply missed by her beloved children, Joe Hodges, Patti (Bob) Rasmussen, Bill Hodges, Rick ( Katie) Hodges, and Maryanne ( Michael) Dunleavy; 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, grandparents Anna and Gustave Sievers, son, Robert, daughter-in-law, Sandi, and sibling, Ernest Rittershaus.

The Hodges family will receive guests at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home on Sunday, November 20, from 2-7 pm, with a 6 pm rosary.

Anne's funeral mass will be celebrated Monday morning, November 21, at 10:00 am (in state 9:30 am) at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 23615 Power Rd., Farmington.
