Angelina Dakesian, age 98, originally of Allen Park, MI, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Ascension Providence Hospital, Novi Campus.
Angelina (Angie) Dakesian was born June 30, 1924, in Detroit, MI, the daughter to Italian immigrant parents Geuseppe (Jew-sep-ee) and Costanza (Kuh-stan-zuh) D'Avanzo.
She was first generation American born and grew up in the multi-cultural area of Delray in Detroit Michigan where her parents owned a grocery store. In later years, her mother moved to Southgate Michigan where she started the Purity Dairy Company. Angie was so proud of her family's business and often told people "My family makes the best Italian wine and ice cream!" On June 17, 1950, Angie married Gideon Dakesian, a local Armenian Delray boy who was a long- time friend of her brothers. Angie and "Gid" owned and operated a local grocery and butcher shop in Southwest Detroit and had three daughters, Mary, Nancy, and Jeanette. In 1964, they moved to Allen Park Michigan were Angie lived in her own home until her 90 th birthday! Gideon worked with his brother-in-law, Joe, at Purity Dairy and Angie worked for the IRS in the Federal Building in downtown Detroit taking the city bus everyday for 30 years as she never drove. She was an avid walker and often spent her lunch hours walking to J. L. Hudson's, Crowley's, Sanders, and Qwikee Donuts. In later years while babysitting her grandchildren, Angie was always walking them to the park, library, and of course, Kroger! She loved babies and was a caregiver for three generations: her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her loving smile, humor, infectious laugh, and good-natured personality continued to charm not only her family, but the staff and residents at her senior living community.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Gideon, daughter, Nancy, and siblings, Sarah DiSalvo, Philomena Butera, Joseph D'Avanzo, Lucy King, and Jerry D'Avanzo as well as her beloved sister-in-law, Sadie Zazaian. She is the beloved mother of Mary Pilon, and Jeanette (Terry) Robinson; cherished grandmother of Laura (Jeremy) Parks, Michael (Betsy) Pilon, Sara (Sean) Morgan, Ellen (James) Hassell, Jonathan (Elizabeth) Robinson, and dearest great-grandmother of Max and Emily Pilon, Lexi Parks, and Bella, Gideon, and Macie Morgan as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The deep love Angelina had for her family for her 98 years couldn't be expressed more perfectly than in her own famous words, "God Don't Make No Junk!"
