Alfred
Mukomel
Mar 27, 1929 — Dec 27, 2024
Southfield
Alfred Mukomel, born March 27, 1929 in Detroit, MI, reunited with the love of his life at the gates of Heaven in the early morning hours of Friday, December 27, 2024.
Alfred is preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 62 years, Hedwig (d.2012) and daughter, Kathi (d.2016). He is survived by his loving children Barbara and Dan (Kelly), cherished grandchildren Eric Porzadek (Sonja), Stacey Grier, Lynsey Mukomel-Wilson (Kyle), and Danielle Mukomel (Luke), and adored great grandchildren Keaton, Gabriel and Oliver.
Alfred's vigor for life was exemplified throughout his time on earth: taking road trips to national parks along the west coast with three little ones in the backseat of a blue 1965 Plymouth Fury, putting in more than half a century at Chrysler as a cylinder head designer, experiencing an audience with Pope John Paul II, traveling to Europe for milestone anniversary celebrations and taking over 20 cruises in less than 40 years. He would tell you his sweetie, Hedy, first caught the travel bug, but photo evidence over the years shows he was just as stricken by it.
Perhaps even more impressive than his adventurous and hardworking spirit was his ability to remember intricate details of those beautiful memories decades later, and his love of sharing those memories with anyone who would listen.
A devout Catholic and proud Polish man, Alfred lived 95 remarkable, active years – he even cut his own grass a month before his passing. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September and decided to fight it with chemotherapy, but God proved to have other plans for him.
A generous caretaker through and through, Al's loved ones will miss his storytelling nature, pre-meal prayers and toasts and his insistence on two rings whenever they returned home after spending time together. Though his death leaves a profound absence, they are comforted by the moments they shared for so many years.
The family will receive guests Sunday, January 5 from 3–8 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, at Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home (23720 Farmington Rd, Farmington, MI).
A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, January 6 at 11 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m., at Divine Providence Catholic Church (25335 W. Nine Mile Road, Southfield, MI) followed by a burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery (25800 W 10 Mile Rd, Southfield, MI). I
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to the Solanus Casey Center .
