Alan James Wakenhut, of Livonia, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 7 th , 2023, after an extended illness. He was 80 years old.
Born in Lansing, Michigan on November 12, 1942, Alan was the son of the late Wynn and Arlene (Galligan) Wakenhut, formerly of Northville.
Alan was owner and president of Enviro Systems, Inc. , a pollution prevention equipment company, based in Livonia. He was appointed to the State of Michigan Environmental Hazardous Waste Policy Commission by both Governors Blanchard and Engler and served a number of years as chair of the Environmental Hazardous Waste Policy Committee of the Detroit Chamber of Commerce.
Alan was known for being devoted to his faith and his family. He was a devout Catholic and very active at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Livonia. He loved fishing, especially with his two grandsons. He spent much of his time with his family, doing professional genealogy, working puzzles and listening to music, particularly '30s & '40s big band jazz.
Alan is the dear husband of Launa Kathryn (Darnell) Wakenhut; beloved father of Jeanne Wakenhut of Aberdeen, Scotland and Amy (Robert) Jones of Farmington; loving grandpa of Charlie and Trevor Jones; cousin to Janice Fuller of Lansing; brother-in-law to numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Alan was preceded in death by his only sibling, Gary W. Wakenhut.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 12, from 3-6 PM, with a 6 PM rosary service.
The funeral Mass for Alan will be celebrated Monday, February 13, at 10:30 AM (in state 10:00 AM) at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 11441 Hubbard, Livonia.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Young America's Foundation or Wayne State University Men's Swim and Diving Team t o honor Alan's life.
