Life Legacy

Age 62, of Farmington Hills, died suddenly on March 20, 2013, while on vacation in Florida.

Mike was born October 16, 1950, in Pontiac, Michigan, the son of Donald and Patricia (Casey) McAskin. He married Patricia (McEachen) on March 27, 1971, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Detroit.

Mike was the third of five children born to Patricia and Don McAskin. He was raised in Farmington. At an early age, Mike developed a love for sports and he went on to play football, basketball and baseball at Our Lady of Sorrows High School where he graduated in 1968.

Mike pursued his college studies at Northern Michigan University and Wayne State University with the intention of becoming a teacher, but glass was in his blood and that led him to Henderson Glass where he learned the trade from his father, Don.

Before Mike established himself in his career, he found the love of his life, Patricia McEachen. They met in 1969 and were married on March 27, 1971. Mike and Tricia were blessed with four children: Katie, Patrick, Jimmy and John Angus. The only thing Mike loved more than his children was telling his family and friends about his children’s accomplishments.

Even when Mike’s career required more of his time, he always made his children, and especially Tricia, his absolute priority. His career in the glass business began at the age of 15. Mike’s entrepreneurial spirit allowed him to build two successful companies: Glass and Metal Distributors, which he opened in 1985, and Great Lakes Glass Distributors, which turned out to be his last, great professional achievement.

As Mike always said, “the glass business has been good to this family.” It not only allowed Mike to see his children earn undergraduate and graduate degrees, it allowed him the opportunity to have his own little slice of “God’s Country” in Muskoka, Canada. Mike loved everything about Muskoka, which he referred to as his therapy. Even more so, he relished sharing the “McAskin-Muskoka” experience with friends and family. While Mike enjoyed sharing his Muskoka with everyone, he took the most pride in seeing his nine grandchildren experience his favorite place on earth.

To our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather and friend: See you in Muskoka!

Mike is the beloved husband of nearly 42 years to Patricia; loving and devoted father of Katie (John) Courtney, Patrick (Anne), Jim (Nikki) and John Angus; dear brother of Kathy (Gary) Luyben, Thomas (Vickie), Gordie (Bonnie) and Colleen (Cary Ratzloff); and cherished grandfather of Maeve, Kevin, Casey, Brendan, Molly, Mairead, Maddie, Maggie and Griffin.

Visitation is scheduled for Saturday from 4-9 pm and Sunday from 2-9 pm at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home, downtown Farmington.

A time of prayer and remembering is planned for Sunday evening at 7 pm.

Mike's Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, March 25, at 11:00 am (in state 10 am) at Christ the King Catholic Church, 20800 Grand River (at Burt Rd.), Detroit.

Graveside prayers at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield, will follow Mass.

Memorial gifts are suggested to St. Alexander Church Food Cupboard or Our Lady of Sorrows’ Society of St. Vincent DePaul.

Please keep the McAskins in your thoughts and prayers during this most difficult time.
